The Crane Checker ensures safe and continuous movement of containers on and off vessels. Coordinate all activities under and around assigned cranes to ensure optimal performance in a safe and efficient manner.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma
- Successful completion of Ship Worker’s training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- High standard of physical fitness
- Good vision (can be achieved with corrective lenses)
- Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
- Basic Computer skills with the ability to prioritize work, and take initiative to improve processes.
Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
- Ensure high productivity in discharge and load operations; communicate with Equipment Operators for correct positioning of containers/cargo.
- Liaise with Berth Operators to ensure all hatches/bays are unlashed and equipment is clear. Ensure hatch covers are unsecured prior to removal by Gantry Crane.
- Visually check and confirm inbound cargo with discharge documentation; report discrepancies to the Quay Supervisor.
- Identify Out of Gauge (OOG) containers, Breakbulk, non-unitized cargo, and Refrigerated (Reefer) containers, ensuring necessary equipment and labor are on standing by.
- Be present at the crane when the Crane operator arrives. Ensure crane and area are safe and clear of obstacles. Report any concerns to the Quay Supervisor.
- Use initiative to maintain high productivity, monitor crane performance, and ensure personnel are aware of expectations. Keep the Quay Supervisor informed.
- Ensure all documentation and data match the task. Check container numbers/types, record operational delays, and maintain an accurate record of cargo and vessel damage.
- Maintain knowledge of Health and Safety policies and ensure safe working practices. Report breaches to the Quay Supervisor. Ensure compliance with PPE requirements.
- Participate in training for self and others, including plant machinery operation. Contribute to the development of new technologies and working practices.
- Be ready to take on tasks as needed and maintain polite, professional communication. Ensure good timekeeping and proactive approach to operations.
