Freeport Container Port seeks a highly experienced and results-driven Head of Engineering to be a part of a world-class port terminal driving global trade and to lead and manage all engineering operations within a busy container terminal environment. The Head of Engineering will use all reasonable efforts to influence the engineering strategy and standards in line with Hutchison Ports established standards.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of port equipment and infrastructure while driving strategic initiatives to support operational excellence and long-term asset performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all engineering and maintenance functions across the terminal.
- Ensure optimal performance, availability, and lifecycle management of container handling equipment, including STS gantry crane systems, RTGs, reach stackers, and associated systems.
- Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and improve productivity.
- Terminal operations, planning and stevedore operations principles
- Collaborate with Operations and other departments to align engineering services with operational priorities
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including digitalization and automation, where applicable.
- Leading major capital projects, including upgrades, retrofits, and new equipment installations.
- Manage departmental budgets, cost controls, and procurement activities.
- Profit and Loss principles; preparing CAPEX and OPEX Budgets
- Managing related operations or selling services within the shipping industry
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, technicians, and support staff.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
- Working in Lean Six Sigma environment focused on continuous improvement
Qualifications and Experience (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (Master’s Degree preferred).
- Minimum of 10+ years experience in engineering management within a port, terminal, heavy industrial, or logistics environment.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing large technical teams.
- Strong knowledge of port maintenance industry regulations.
- Experience with asset management systems and reliability-centered maintenance.
- Proven track record in project management and capital investment planning.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
Essential Functions (including, but are not limited to):
- Identify those aspects of the Engineering Department functions that are performing below standard or expectation. Continually seek to improve methods of work to increase performance and subsequently, profitability.
- Identify and implement the training requirements of the workplace and closely monitor the progress with the assistance of the Labour & Deployment Manager and the Human Resources Department.
- Monitor, collaborate and support the container handling and ancillary plant equipment procurement program.
- Develop and implement equipment framework strategies to provide maximum cost benefits and equipment availability and reliability to Hutchison Ports FCP and FHC.
- Direct, manage, communicate, and implement FCP’s Engineering efficiencies, Safety and Environmental best practices, process improvements, cost saving initiatives, standardization in line with the group strategy, objectives, and expectations.
- Ensure companywide conformance and compliance with established FCP and FHC corporate policies, Engineering, Health, Safety & Environmental procedures, as well as all applicable legislation, and regulatory requirements nationally as appropriate through controlled auditing processes.
- Accountable for leading an engaged team, providing direction, and promoting collaboration while ensuring they are empowered to carry out the goals and objectives of the business.
- Ensure that the highest levels of safety are applied in all activities.
