The Berth operator, as directed, undertakes shipworking, rigging and container/cargo handling duties, line and block checking duties, the driving of Port Equipment, and the operation of other plant machinery where licensed to do so. Duties to be performed with due concern for safety, minimum damage, and in accordance with established operating procedures.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma
- Successful completion of Ship Worker’s training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- High standard of physical fitness
- MUST not be afraid of heights
- Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills while taking initiative to improve processes.
- Be able to prioritize work
Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
- Report to the Quay Supervisor to confirm work requirements before shift begins.
- Secure and release container/cargo based on stow and lashing plans.
- Use lashing equipment to secure and unsecure breakbulk/non-unitized cargo for loading/discharge.
- Liaise with the ship’s crew for the availability of lashing gear and stowage of unused gear.
- Provide standard crane signals as directed.
- Perform laboring tasks or other duties as directed by supervisors in warehouse or operations areas.
- Drive port equipment and operate plant machinery where licensed.
- Be ready for work at the start of the shift and ensure effective handovers with no operational delays.
- Keep documents and data up to date and fully brief relevant personnel during handovers.
- Ensure compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Participate in self-training and help train others, including on plant machinery operation.
- Contribute to the development of new technologies and practices.
